V is for the Vampire Bat – Of count Dracula fame

You became famous as well as infamous,
in Bram Stoker’s movie Dracula.
In the movie the count of Transylvania,
is actually a vampire bat himself.

The movie was a million-dollar extravaganza,
and according to the movie,
you actually subsist on,
the blood of human beings.

In reality, you rarely attack humans.
But you attack other animals,
as for you, they are,
a source for sucking blood.

You are a blind animal,
as you are not gifted with eyes.
But instead, you use infrared radiation,
to detect prey that can be sources of blood.

Unlike the majestic count Dracula,
who lives in a magnificent castle,
you actually live in dark caves,
and other places of desolation.

Ever since I watched the movie Dracula,
as a young lad of sixteen,
I have been fascinated by you.
Oh, creature of the dark dungeons.

You are a beautiful animal,
with a mechanism for locating prey,
from which mankind has learned,
many a marvellous technique of science.

You are the stuff of folklore.
A source of tales of terror.
But you are just a creation of evolution,
like all other animals in the world.

  1. Bats have always been in the news for the wrong reasons. Recent being the Coronavirus that spread from the bats.
As rightly mentioned by you, they however are the nature’s marvel! Its only the man’s making that they are cast in dark shades.

  2. Bats currently have a rather ominous reputation as spreaders of coronavirus! An interesting choice for the letter V!

  3. Not a good time to appreciate bats. haha. bats just remind me of my favorite comic character Batman! Like the character, they too are the dark knights.

    1. Vampire bats are rare. There is a clear distinction here between a vampire bat and an ordinary bat. Thanks for visiting.
