You look so innocent and sweet,
and so forlorn and lost.
You have beautiful horns and a lovely face.
You are the deer an animal so sweet.
The majestic Tiger and the ferocious Lion,
hunt you relentlessly for meal after meal.
You run as fast as you can,
sometimes you escape and sometimes you are easy meat.
Over times immemorial,
you have been hunted by men of all hues,
by kings of great kingdoms,
for sport and recreation.
Some of you are plain,
while some of you are spotted,
but all of you have one thing in common,
you are entirely harmless.
It is indeed a pity,
that an animal like you that gives no trouble to anyone,
is hunted so relentlessly,
by so many with so much cruelty and heartlessness.
You are part of many a religious myth.
The Reindeers among you pull Santa Clause’s chariot,
full of presents for children during Christmas,
or so goes the story.
And in the epic tale of Ramayana,
Maricha the terrifying demon,
assumes your beautiful Golden form,
and makes Sita send Rama to capture you for her.
All said and done,
you are another beautiful marvel,
of millions of years of evolution.
You and your lot simply hold me in a thrall.
It is indeed a pity,
that an animal like you that gives no trouble to anyone,
is hunted so relentlessly,
by so many with so much cruelty and heartlessness.
You’ve stated a universal truth. Innocence has no place in this world.
Yes, Tom. Innocence is the first casualty in this world of ours. Just like a Deer vulnerable and innocent human beings also have no place in this world of ours.
Deers are majestic creatures- it is indeed sad the way they are ruthlessly hunted by bigger animals.
Yes, they are sweet and innocent. We can at least forgive lions and tigers for hunting them but what about human beings?
Sir I loved the way you told it with narrative style. Maricha and Ramayana breathed again in your poem. So beautiful!
Thank you Swarnali.
What a lovely post on a beautiful animal. You are right they harm no one yet they are the most hunted animal. Animals are hunting as a part of survival and that is how the eco system works but what about humans. That is not needed and has to be stopped.
Absolutely. There is no need to hunt an innocent animal for sport. Glad you liked the poem.
I love deer, especially the spotted ones. They look so delicate and beautiful. The sambar variety are a lot more muscular and strong.
Yes. Deers are indeed beautiful animals. Glad you liked the poem.
Agree with you. They are hunted by humans & ferocious creatures.
Survival of the fittest.
I liked the image of deer sitting on roads in Ooty during this lockdown period.
Yes, survival of the fittest though it is a pity. Glad you liked the poem.
They are royal and majestic beauties. Your poem seems like an ode to the deers. Beautiful and poignant.
Thank you Srivalli.
Beauty is always sought after. But in case of deer, its a bane. Being harmless is a virtue but it costs them life. Pretty but poor Deer, I must say.
Yes indeed Anagha. Pretty but poor deer is a very apt way to put it.
Deer are pretty animals. Every spring, we get a family of deer visiting our neighborhood. We have a lot of nearby woods which the deer like. Weekends In Maine
Yes, indeed they are pretty animals and nice to know you get to see a lot of deer. Thanks for dropping by.
