My Take:

Pros:

Right from the word go, the author has concentrated on only one thing, which is to maintain the pace of events that occur in the story. Using this one strategy she has managed to keep the reader’s eyes riveted on the pages. As I read the book, I got the feeling that I was on an extremely fast roller coaster ride, and I might fly off my seat at any moment. The reader finds himself constantly in a hurry to find out what happens next. This makes the book unputdownable. I read the book within a day.

The characters are extremely well-defined and stay etched in the minds of the reader long after he/she finishes reading the book. The author lays bare everything that occurs without keeping anything hidden from the reader. Despite this, the reader’s interest is kept very much alive. Authors normally resort to suspense, to keep interest alive in a thriller. But as far as this book goes there is not much room for suspense anywhere. Everything is there in black and white right in front of the reader. To come up with an analogy it is like watching a fast-paced movie full of action which keeps the audience’s eyes glued to the screen constantly. But nothing is unknown at any point.

There is some suspense in the sense that we do wonder what is next in the sequence of events, but it is not the kind of suspense one experiences in a whodunit or a normal thriller.

The usual style of writing a thriller is to concentrate on the protagonist’s activities. This story on the other hand has mainly been written from the point of view of the antagonist. We get a very good peep into the sadistic, obsessed psyche of the antagonist in so many ways. In addition, the antagonist’s brilliant technical brain and her ability to face adverse situations head-on tell us a lot about her.

The author is an extremely good storyteller. She managed to keep me completely enthralled and enchanted. Kudos to her. Even the chapter titles are thought out in such a way that they urge the reader to keep turning the pages.

Riveting is the only apt word to describe this book. The chapters and the breaks within the chapters are short and designed to make the reader forge ahead with the pages nonstop. The cover is beautifully designed and taken along with the blurb gives us a very good idea of what one can expect. The author clearly mentions in her note to the reader that the book is primarily going to concentrate on pace, and this is something that has been done with aplomb and alacrity.

Cons:

What can I say? Perhaps I could say suspense of the usual kind is missing. Maybe I could say that the ending was too predictable, at least for an avid reader of thrillers like me. Whatever I may say, the pace at which this book moves and the thrill it gives as a person flips through the pages make all these so-called defects pale into insignificance. So, I am compelled to conclude that this book does not have any drawbacks at least as far as I am concerned.

Conclusion:

A very big Yay! Pick up this book immediately if you love thrillers that are fast-paced and keep you hooked from start to finish.

Rating: I am going with a full 5/5 for Mansi Babbar’s Evoked The Lavasa Incident.
