My Take:
The book has a good story and a decent plot which has depth. I liked the determination shown by the two detectives Jamie and Jinu to get to the bottom of things and solve the crime. As befits a good thriller there is a chase cemented together by clues which lead to the final denouement. I also like the fact that the author has fused science fiction in modicum amounts to come up with a motive for the crime. She has done some in depth research behind the scientific aspects of the motive behind the crime and explains that part of it clearly.
The efforts made by the detective duo of Jamie and Jinu to solve the crime is commendable. The book attempts to be fast paced and succeeds to a great extent. These are some of the strengths I could find keeping in mind the fact that the author is a first time writer. But there is plenty of scope for improvement. This book requires at least 3 to 4 more rounds of editing. There has been an effort made to fill pages by unnecessarily stuffing a large number of repetitive sentences.
The grammar is weak. All these points have to be taken into consideration and the book has to be edited properly by a good editor who knows his job. If these points are taken care of then the plot is good enough to make a pretty good book. But still for a first time author who is making an attempt I commend her initiative. I am going with a 2.89/5 for The Mystery of the Silky Waves.
Good non-partisan review, Jayakumar!👍 I find that some debutant authors scrimp on editing resulting in their readers feeling let down.
Thank you Sundar.
