Betrayal

Betrayal

I faced the blazing fire,
from the enemy’s tanks,
without flinching or wavering,
and without any fear in my heart.

It was your love for me,
that gave me the courage to carry on.

I moved deep into enemy territory,
always on the lookout for a sniper’s bullet,
knowing that my life was in danger,
and I could become another distant memory.

It was your love for me,
that gave me the courage to carry on.

Men were falling all around me,
their bodies struck by a hail of bullets,
screaming at us from the enemy’s guns,
and fear did its best to strike at our hearts.

It was your love for me,
that gave me the courage to carry on.

We fought on relentlessly,
for the sake of our holy motherland,
which the enemy had occupied by brute force,
and many of us paid with our lives.

It was your love for me,
that gave me the courage to carry on

We finally drove the enemy away.
And snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
We did our country proud,
and returned victorious from the battleground.

It was your love for me,
that gave me the courage to carry on.

I finally got back home,
and found a missive from you, waiting for me.
I opened it and read it eagerly.
and stood shell shocked at what it said.

This time I could not find the courage to carry on,
for your missive told me your love was no longer mine.

You told me you had lost your heart,
to another man whom you loved more than me.
Oh, my sweet, just tell me something.
What did I do to deserve this betrayal?

Now that your love is no longer mine,
will I have the courage to carry on?

Sometimes yes, but I would not accept it as a hard and fast rule. Love can be permanent but many a time people tend to betray the trust placed in them by their lovers. Then it really hurts.
